In this section you will find two groups of download files. The first of which were originally written for the Freshwater Invertebrate taxonomy courses I ran at Flatford Mill Field Studies Center.
The second group are papers written in my role as Suffolk County Recorder for freshwater invertebrates about the species of various orders which are known to occur within the county of Suffolk.             They are all free to download and may be printed out to help with identification, although if you use them as part of any publications then an acknowledgement and /or reference would be appreciated.
These files are mostly in Pdf format and once downloaded you will need suitable software to view them.

DOWNLOADABLE KEYS

Crayfish_photo_key

This is a photographic key which gives all the key differences between the Native White Claw Crayfish and many of the invasive species which seem to have replaced the native in most parts of the country. The specimens photographed in this key are all preserved and were donated for my use by the Ipswich Environment Agency, invasive species should not be returned to the site where they are found and should be dispatched on site.

Great Diving Beetles

This is a 5 page PDF covering Great Diving Beetles, as well as the Great Silver Water Beetle. The photos are all taken in Suffolk, allow you to tell males from females and identify with only a hand lens all British Species whilst alive.

Key to Beetle Larvae

This pdf uses drawings of the most distinct parts of the bodies of water beetle larvae, along with a glossary explaining the terminology you need to know when using a hand lens or microscope on preserved specimens. A flow chart system allows you to work your way to genus level and gives the number of species in each.

Keys to Water Bugs and Water Flea Families

Key to the Larger Water Bugs

A mixture of line drawings and specially photographed specimens are used to show the key morphological details needed to identify, the British Species of Water Scorpions, Stick Insects, Saucer Bugs, River Bugs and Boatmen.

Key to Corixid Bugs

This guide will identify the majority of British species but should not be seen as a substitute for a complete key to these bugs. The drawings are merely a short cut to the males of most common species.

Key to Corixid Bugs
The male fore tarsus shapes and genitalia of most common species are covered in this 9 page key.

Photo Guide to Waterflea Families

This is a simple photo guide to 10 of the 14 families of Water Fleas in the British Isles. Photos taken through the microscope are annotated in order to highlight the key morphological details to look for when examining specimens under the microscope.
