GREEN / WATER FROGS

A second visit was made to the reservoir at Grove Farm, Bentley TM1137 (see 'Water Frogs Make it to Bentley',White Admiral 66) on the 1st June 2007 at 1900 hours. SARG (Suffolk Amphibian and Reptile Group) joined John Baker and me to try to catch specimens, photograph them and record their calls. Catches were disappointing, producing only very small frogs. John played a recording of Water Frogs, hoping that the reservoir frogs would respond. The result of this experiment was also disappointing.

At approximately 1600 hours on the same day I observed four large Water Frogs resting on water-weed, basking in the sun. By 1900 the reservoir was possibly too shady for Water Frogs to stay on the surface. The photograph below was taken by Duncan Sweeting on our first visit.

Another visit will be made later in June, at a weekend, when we can choose an earlier time and a sunny day.
