A SUFFOLK SUMMER OF INSECTS

DRAWING, ILLUSTRATION AND PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITIONS
Competitions for Children, Young people and Every photographer

Following the events linked to the first National Insect Week last year, Suffolk Naturalists’ Society (SNS) is again in 2005 organising competitions in drawing, illustration and photography.  The aim is still to encourage both children and adults to take a closer look at the millions of insects that inhabit the parks, gardens, fields and woodlands of Suffolk and to learn more about the fascinating world of insects.

The competitions will be open to entries from members of the general public and to members of organised groups including schools, WATCH groups and natural history societies. It is not necessary to be a member of the SNS to become involved. An interest in natural history in general and in insects in particular is all that is required.

The Big Bug Drawing Competition
(For children under 11 )

Subject: Insects in my garden / insects in the park

First prize:        Free family membership of SNS for 2006, a nature viewer and the book Collins Gem Guide: Insects by Michael Chinery.

Second prize:    Free family membership of SNS for 2006, a nature viewer and the Field Studies Council field identification charts: Guide to the Bugs on Bushes; Woodland Name Trail; and Freshwater Name Trail.

Third prize:       Free family membership of SNS for 2006, a nature viewer and the Field Studies Council field identification chart Guide to the Bugs on Bushes.

This competition is open to children aged under 11. A child’s work may be entered by an individual or through an organisation such as a school or WATCH group. Children are asked to draw a picture showing one or more of the insects they have found in a garden or park. Aspects of National Curriculum Science at key stages 1 and 2 could be covered by schools encouraging pupils to enter the competition. For example in Unit 2B Section 2 one of the objectives is that children should learn to observe and make a record of animals and plants found in the local environment and in section 3 that they should use drawings to present results. Unit 4B Section 3 also expects that children should learn to observe the conditions in a local habitat and make a record of the animals found. The judges will be looking for evidence of accurate observation of living organisms rather than artistic expertise based on illustrations in books.

Entries should be on A3 or A4 paper and may be completed in any medium. The child’s name, age and address, a contact phone number and the location where the insects were seen should be written on the back of the drawing. Entries will be returned to the individual or the organisation provided a stamped, addressed envelope is enclosed.

All entries must be received by 4pm on Friday, 2nd September 2005 and winners will be announced before Friday, 16th September 2005.  Winners will also be notified by post. Winners’ certificates and prizes will be presented by the natural history author, Michael Chinery, at an awards ceremony at Alder Carr Farm near Needham Market on Saturday, 1st October 2005.

Insect Illustrator Competition
( For young people 11 to 16 )

Subject: Studies of a single insect in the style of a field guide or a scientific diagram

First Prize:        Free family membership of SNS for 2006, a hand lens, an insect net, collecting tubes, and the book Collins Complete British Insects by Michael Chinery.

Second prize:    Free family membership of SNS for 2006, a hand lens, collecting tubes and a copy of Collins Gem Guide: Butterflies & Moths by Michael Chinery.

Third prize:       Free family membership of SNS for 2006, a hand lens, collecting tubes and the Field Studies Council field identification chart Guide to British Grasshoppers and allied Insects.

This competition is open to young people aged 11 to 16. The young person’s work may be entered by an individual or through an organisation such as a school or WATCH group. Each entry should be an accurate illustration or scientific diagram of a particular species of insect and should demonstrate a clear understanding of what separates insects from other groups of invertebrates. Aspects of National Curriculum Science at key stage 3 could be covered by schools encouraging pupils to enter the competition. For example in Unit 7D Section 11 insects are a suitable group of invertebrates to study when looking at the classification of living things.  This can be developed further in Unit 8D Section 2.  Section 6 of the same Unit also requires the observation at first hand of the organisms that comprise the living community in a habitat. The abundance of insects in all habitats means that recording these species will form an essential part of any study of the community.  The judges will be looking for evidence of accurate observation of living organisms rather than artistic expertise based on illustrations in books.

Entries should be on A3 or A4 paper and may be completed in any medium. The young person’s name, age and address, a contact phone number and the name of the insect and the location where it was seen should be written on the back of the drawing.
