Following the publication of our recording programme towards the forthcoming Flora of Suffolk in the spring issue of White Admiral, we were gratified to be joined on several of our meetings by members of the informal Sudbury recording group, Barry and Jane Ruggles, Robin Ford and Peter and Wendy Rowe. This gave added encouragement to our own members, some of whom travel considerable distances to get to such remote parts of north Suffolk as South Elmham St James and Worlingworth. We also received support from Phillip Watson of Suffolk FWAG who made arrangements for us to visit private land where he had been in contact with sympathetic landowners, so thanks to him also.
We shall hope to continue with our recording in 2005 if there are still under-recorded areas within our reasonable reach, so look out for our programme in the next spring issue. If any would be recorders feel doubtful about joining a group of strangers, may I quote from a letter from Barry and Jane Ruggles, who were unable to come to our final meeting.
“We would like to thank you and the others in your group for the friendly welcome and help you gave us earlier in the season. This inspired us to undertake tetrad recording in our own area with a new outlook, and we think it has been very successful.”
Statistics: twelve tetrads were recorded in spring and autumn with cumulative totals of up to 300 species. 35 tetrads were visited once with totals of up to approximately 250. These were all tetrads with under 200 on Martin Sanford’s maps, and in most cases under 150.
If any members would like to go on my direct mailing list, I should be pleased to hear from them, and please remember – beginners welcome!
