A HERBALIST’S VIEW OF LIME FLOWERS

There are several species of the lime or linden tree, genus   Tilia, native to this country. All of them produce sweet-scented flowers that can be used medicinally in the form of tea or tincture. There is no connection with the citrus fruit of the same name. The effect is relaxant and mildly sedative. In particular the remedy produces relaxation of the peripheral circulatory system making a useful contribution, along with other herbs, to the treatment and prevention of high blood pressure. It has some anti-inflammatory action also and can be used with elderflower as a tea to treat  colds  and  fevers.

The following recipe makes an uplifting and relaxing drink.

‘Tea of Happiness’

Chamomile flowers – two parts (dry weight) Peppermint leaf – two parts

Limeflowers – one part

Lavender flowers – one part

Mix together and infuse two teaspoonfuls per cup of boiling water. Leave five minutes  before  straining  and  drinking  the  liquid.  Add  one  teaspoonful  of  honey  if required.
