The Suffolk Hedgerow Survey (White
Admiral 49: 1-2; 53: 12), which is being conducted on a
parish-by-parish basis, is making very good progress. To date (Spring 2003), 15
parish hedgerow surveys have been completed and co-ordinators are starting or
currently working on another 122. The target for completion is 2005.
In my own
parish of Bentley, where an enthusiastic team of 25 volunteers have started on
the third year of surveying, over 50% of the boundaries have been completed.
Progress is ahead of schedule and the end of 2003 should complete the majority
of the project.
The Hedgerow Survey Steering Group has two new members, Diana
Ball and Martin Douglas, both of whom bring co-ordinator experience to the meetings.
Martin has also become the Steering Group contact for the west of the county.
He can be contacted at:

The advance of the Hedgerow Project benefits a great deal from personal recommendation. If your parish is undertaking the survey, please speak to friends and
colleagues in neighbouring parishes to spread the word and explain that the surveying
is not difficult – in fact it is great fun and very enjoyable. It is hoped that
the survey will extend eventually to include all the parishes in Suffolk. If
your parish has not commenced the survey and you would like to know how to
start, contact the Greenprint Forum at the address given below.
‘General interest’ posters suitable for any parish, as well as ‘targeted
posters’ for specific parishes (where there is no current survey) are
available, as is advice on coordinating a parish survey.
