BOTANICAL RECORDING: 2002-2004

Less than 100 species at end of 2002 There was a lot of good recording work done in 2002 including the arrival of two new species for the County: Poa infirma at Landguard Common, Felixstowe (Paul Stanley), and Senecio inaequidens at Trimley (Barbara Mathews) and Sutton Hoo (Stella Wolfe). I expect the latter species to spread quite rapidly so do keep an eye out for ragworts with linear leaves. Problems with our recording software here at SBRC took rather longer to solve than I anticipated and it is only in the last month that I have got it to cope with 'I' tetrads. We are now up-to-date with processing the new data and have produced an updated coverage map with tetrad totals as well as maps showing those squares with less than 100 species and less than 200 species (see Maps 1 and 2). As with previous years the first target should be the squares below 100 species, but don't worry too much about the tetrads on the county border and the coast which only have very small areas within Suffolk and so will naturally have lower totals.

Less than 200 species at end of 2002 If you would like species lists for any particular squares do give me a call or drop me a line.

Those of you in the BSBI may already have heard about the Local Change Survey that aims to repeat the tetrad part of the 1987-88 Monitoring Scheme. This will mean re-surveying tetrads A, J and W in squares TL75, TL78, TM05, TM35 and TM38. I have lists of the species found in 1987 and 88, and we can also list any additional species found since then. The new scheme will also run for two years (2003/04) and during that period each all of the habitats in the square need recording with visits made during spring, summer and autumn. If anyone is interested in taking part in this project please contact me to discuss suitable squares and methodology.

We stopped supplying zip files of the magazine for download, with issue 53.
This is because the service was very infrequently used and it saves space on the server.
If you miss downloading however please e-mail me, Adrian Chalkley
I will decide whether there is sufficient demand for an alternative method.
