During the Summer I got down to some re-decorating and at the end of each session it is my practice to wash out the paintbrushes in white spirit, and dry them on an old piece of cloth. After a couple of days this became impregnated with old paint and spirit and, to my surprise, also attracted swarms of fruit flies (Drosophila sp), the cloth became almost black with them. They may have at first been attracted into my shed by some demijohns of home brew wine but quickly showed a preference for white spirit. The jam jars in which I washed my brushes also had a fatal attraction for them and soon contained dozens of drowned flies. I suppose there is some aromatic in the white spirit that attracted them. I wonder have any other DIYers noticed the same thing?
