SOME SUFFOLK CYNIPID GALLS

Since agreeing to be gall recorder for SNS, matters seem to have conspired to keep me away from Suffolk. However, from the few visits I have made I offer the following records for the new Millennium. Perhaps they will stimulate others to do some recording.

Phanacis hypochoeridis, TM5074, Walberswick, elongate swellings on Hypochoeris radicata stems, 5.ix.2001.

Biorrhiza pallida, Oak Apple, TM4767, Minsmere on Q.robur buds, old galls, 4.ix.2001; TM1337, Tattingstone on Q.robur buds, 22.iv.2001.

As yet the new British colonist Andricus aries does not appear to have colonised Suffolk despite being widespread in Essex, having been found as far north as Little Clacton. The galls are situated in Quercus robur buds and consist of a rounded chamber with a long, sometimes curved process, arising from the distal end. I am interested to receive records or specimens of any Suffolk galls via Colchester Museums Museum Resource Centre14, Ryegate Road Colchester CO1 1YG.
