RIGS are Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites, identified as the most important places in the county for geology and geomorphology outside statutorily protected nature reserves and SSSI. The designation of RIGS is one way of recognising and protecting earth science and landscape features in Suffolk for future generations to enjoy.
The Suffolk RIGS group reconvened on 20th April 2002 at Ipswich Museum. It was attended by:
H. Mottram, SCC geologist
P. Allen, retired geology lecturer
C. Markham, geography teacher
A. Fleming, secretary OU Geological Society
D. Lampard, Natural Sciences Curator, Ipswich Museum
R. Markham, retired geology curator.
The aim of the group is to identify and record Suffolk RIGS using the nationally agreed criteria: -
The value of
the site for educational purposes
The value of
the site for geological/geomorphological research
The historical value of the site in terms of advances in earth science knowledge, events or
exploitation
The aesthetic value of the site in relation to promoting public appreciation of earth
sciences.
