MEMBERS' EVENING 2001

Some 40 members attended the Society's members' evening on 5th December, when Rob Macklin gave a fascinating account of the wildlife seen on his spring-time visits to the Pyrenees.

The Pyrenees, Rob explained, are some 270 miles long, stretching from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean, with some excellent wildlife reserves and a wide range of habitats. The Spanish and French sides of the Pyrenees are quite different, the Spanish side being much hotter and drier, Rob said. Habitats and many of the associated animals and plants were illustrated with Rob's excellent slides. The stunning pictures of butterflies, birds, mammals and alpine plants were appreciated by all.

After a brief break for refreshments, members were invited to take part in a light-hearted natural history quiz. The quiz, once again organised by Jon Nicholls, has become an annual event.

The Society thanks Rob and Jon for putting together such a varied and interesting programme.

NEWSLETTER EDITOR

Colin Hawes has stepped down from editing the Society's newsletter. The new editor of White Admiral is David Walker. David trained as a biologist and lectured at Suffolk College, where he is now Head of the School of Engineering. He has been a member of the Suffolk Naturalists' Society since 1992. His interests include: mycology, gardening for wildlife and cooking. The Society welcomes him aboard the Council and thanks him for his invaluable offer to edit our four-monthly publication of the newsletter. Wood Sorrel

WOOD SORREL Oxalis acetos1ella L.

Look out for this plant which is native in old woods, copses and hedgebanks. Records are required for the Suffolk Flora Atlas. Wood Sorrel is a low, creeping, slightly hairy perennial with clover-like leaves. Its flowers are white (rarely pink or mauve) with mauve veins (April - June). Often on humus-rich soil.

Please send your records to the SBRC, details of which can be found on it's own page.

SOCIETY BURSARIES

The Suffolk Naturalists' Society offers four bursaries to encourage the study of natural history in Suffolk. Each of these bursaries, for up to £100, is available annually, but sometimes not all get taken up.

If you are working on a project which will increase our knowledge of the natural history of Suffolk, or considering such a project, why not send for an application form. Details of the scheme are given by our Hon. Treasurer, Howard Mendel in this issue of the newsletter.

Don't forget you can download the whole of each White Admiral as a .zip file.
