Commonly called RIGS, these sites have a lesser formal status than SSSIs but are no less important to teachers, lecturers and interested visitors. Suffolk has its own favourites such as the shelly Red Crag and the unique Coralline Crag.
It is important to retain accessible exposures for the future. That doesn't mean preventing the infilling of some old pits or stopping the digging at an interesting feature - we need to work together since without the digging in the first place we wouldn't have anywhere near the number of exposures that we do.
The aim is to produce a network of sites covering a variety of fossils, strata, landscape features, etc. To achieve this, potential sites need to be identified, described, registered and made known.
