A SUFFOLK SUMMER OF INSECTS The Third Year of Our If you have arrived here from the White Admiral website click here to return. As in the past two years, in conjunction with National Insect Week, the Suffolk Naturalists' Society (SNS)
is again in 2006 organising competitions in drawing, illustration and
photography. Our continued aim is to encourage both children and adults to take a
closer look at the millions of insects that inhabit the parks, gardens, fields
and woodlands of Suffolk and to learn more about their fascinating world.
The competition will be officially launched to coincide with National Insect Week 2006. This runs from June 18th - 24th and is, as it says in the title, a week of national events promoted by the Amateur Entomological Society to encourage the study of entomology. Click here to visit the National Insect Week website There will be seperate competitions and prizes for children, young adults and adults. As it is one of our intentions to encourage children to become more involved in the natural world we will be running two summer events particularly aimed at children, the links below will take you to the correct section on our diary of events page. Sorting Out the Insects Junping Grassland Creatures The competitions will be open to entries from members of the general public and to members of organised groups including schools, WATCH groups and natural history societies. It is not necessary to be a member of the SNS to become involved. An interest in natural history in general and in insects in particular is all that is required. This year there are four competitions to consider .... Big Bug Drawing - Open to children under 11 years. A picture, in any medium, showing one or more insects found in a garden or park, field or woodland. This can be an attractive but not necessarily accurate depiction of one or more insects at any stage of the life cycle, alone or in the habitat. Entries should include the common name/s and where observed. The judges will be looking for evidence of observation of living creatures rather than artistic skill and should not be copied from books. Insect Illustrator - Open to 11 years and over A depiction of an insect or any part of its life cycle, accurate in the scientific sense and showing any definitive features so that it can be readily identified. Entries should include the Latin name, any common name and where it was observed. The judges will be looking for evidence of close observation of living creatures rather than subjects copied from books. Insect Photographer - Open to 11 years and over. This should depict an insect, or any aspect of its biology or lifecycle, presented in its final printed format on photographic paper. It should include the Latin name and any common name, plus where it was observed. Judges will be looking for technical expertise, good composition or the capture of a difficult subject.
